- Why a “cold windowsill” is enemy number one: We are used to keeping all seedlings on the windowsill because there is the most light there. However, the temperature in your room may be comfortable (+23°C), but on the windowsill itself, especially at night, the soil in the cups often cools to +12…+15°C or even deadly +7 degrees. In such cold, the roots freeze, stop drinking water, and the plant quickly dies from fungus (“black leg”). Be sure to place foam plastic or thick cardboard under the trays.

To ensure that your seedlings survive until they are planted in the garden, avoid these common sins:
- Overflow: Too wet, “boggy” soil blocks oxygen access to the roots and is ideal for the reproduction of all kinds of fungi and bacteria. Water the seedlings only when the top layer of soil dries slightly.
- Deep planting: Small seeds are sown almost superficially. For tomato and pepper seeds, the optimal depth is no more than 1 cm. If you bury them deeper, you will have to wait weeks for seedlings and the stems will not sprout correctly (to the bottom) if you place the seeds incorrectly.
- Using non-sterile soil: Soil brought directly from the garden is often contaminated with fungal spores and pest larvae. Always disinfect the soil before sowing (pour boiling water, potassium permanganate solution or use a high-quality purchased substrate, it is not expensive but is very suitable for the weakest and most demanding seedlings).
