Orthodox Christians of the Eastern Rite await one special holiday in the summer from year to year and celebrate it as one of the most important and revered of the 12th holidays in Christianity, namely the Nativity of John the Baptist , or in simple words, the Baptist (godfather) of the Son of the Lord.
However, after the partial transition of some Ukrainian churches to the new Julian calendar, the dates of most religious events have shifted, which is why many are separately interested in when to celebrate the Nativity of John the Baptist 2026 according to the new and old calendar (style) in 2026. For those who adhere to the old calendar (style), the date remains traditional: the Nativity of John the Baptist in 2026 will be celebrated on July 7 (Tuesday), on the same day, according to the old style, the national holiday of Ivan Kupala is also celebrated.

Spiritual significance: why is this holiday so unique?
The Nativity of John the Baptist is a significant and exceptional event. In the Christian tradition, it is customary to celebrate the days of the repose (death) of saints, since this is considered the day of their birth for eternal life in heaven. There are only three exceptions: the Church celebrates the earthly birth only of Jesus Christ , the Virgin Mary and, in fact, John the Baptist .
If we delve a little into history on the eve of this holiday, then according to the sacred text of the Gospel, John was born into the family of the elderly priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth (who was a relative of the Virgin Mary). The couple had no children for a long time and were considered barren. The birth of Zechariah’s son was announced by the archangel Gabriel just during the service. This is important, also because John’s mission was great: he was to prepare the people of Israel for the coming of the Messiah – Jesus Christ – and later baptize Him in the waters of the Jordan River.
Folk context and the intersection of the holidays of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist and Ivan Kupala
No one is surprised by the truly amazing combination in Ukrainian culture of Christian traditions along with the centuries-old pagan beliefs of our ancestors in Rus’ (Rus is the historical name of the territory of modern Ukraine with its center in Kyiv).
The birthday of John the Baptist coincides with the ancient holiday of the summer solstice. Among the people, the church holiday merged with the pagan one, forming the colorful holiday of Ivan Kupala (“Ivan” is John the Baptist, and “Kupala” is an association with ritual bathing and purification by fire).
With the change in the church calendar, the folk holiday also shifted: now the night of Ivan Kupala is celebrated from June 23 to 24 according to the new style (from July 6 to 7 according to the old style).
What you can and cannot do on this day
The Church calls for spending this holiday in prayer and spiritual purification. Since the Nativity of John the Baptist always falls on the Peter’s Fast (Apostolic Fast), all restrictions on food and personal pleasures, which are limited to the time of the holy fast, are maintained, but in honor of this great holiday, the fast is softened – it is allowed to eat fish and a little wine (no more than one glass).
What to do on the day of the Nativity of John the Baptist:
- Attend a festive service in the church, light a candle, and offer a prayer for health.
- Help the needy if possible and give alms to the beggar (it is believed that almsgiving on this day has special power).
- Collect medicinal herbs (people believe that plants collected on Midsummer’s Day have the strongest medicinal effect).
Strict prohibitions:
- Hard physical labor is prohibited: you cannot sew, knit, wash, clean the house, or work in the garden.
- You can’t quarrel: swearing, conflicts, and evil thoughts on this holiday are considered a great sin.
- Food restrictions: You cannot eat meat, dairy products, and eggs because you are fasting.
