An underrated meat that scientists are increasingly paying attention to

Did you know that pork and chicken are not the only foods that can provide your body with quality vitamins in sufficient quantities? There is another meat that Western scientists are increasingly talking about as a source of iron, vitamin B12, zinc, and most importantly, protein in your diet.

Below in the article, we will talk about what kind of meat this is and why it was previously underappreciated.

Lamb: what makes it better?

Historically, chickens and pigs have been traditionally kept and raised in Ukraine as a source of protein and iron, which are so critical for the structure of our bodies. However, few people know that lamb, unlike pork, contains all the essential amino acids necessary for muscle growth, tissue repair, and the immune system.

More iron

You will probably be surprised, but another interesting fact about lamb is that it contains more iron than most types of meat traditionally known to us (compared to traditional beef 2.1 mg per 100 grams or chicken 1.1 mg per 100 grams).

The second interesting fact is heme iron. This is a special form of iron found in lamb and bound to the heme molecule . It has high bioavailability, which means that in simple words, the human body absorbs it better. From 15% to 35% of heme iron that enters the stomach is absorbed, while non-heme iron from plant foods is absorbed much worse.

The third fact is its critical need by the human body for a normal level of hemoglobin in human blood, for the proper functioning of all body systems through blood.

More zinc and vitamin B12

Compared to other types of meat, scientists note that lamb is more nutritious in terms of B12 vitamins, which are responsible for the nervous system and blood flow. Also, the high level of zinc contained in this type of meat positively supports the normal functioning of the immune system, which helps us fight viruses and infections.

Contains healthy fats

We are used to thinking that any fats are harmful to health. For example, vegetable oil in food products often indicates low quality of the product.

So, lamb, on the contrary, saturates the human body with monounsaturated fats, which contain fatty acids with one double bond in the molecular chain. They improve heart function and reduce the level of “bad” cholesterol.

It also contains conjugated linoleic acid (also known as CLA) – a type of omega-6 fatty acid that helps reduce body fat, maintain muscle mass during weight loss, and improve overall metabolism.

Saving

This type of meat is relatively inexpensive compared to veal. However, for less money you will get meat with the same or even less cholesterol, and with prolonged consumption your body will benefit from more protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12.
