The basis of an Easter basket consists of four main elements:
- Easter: This is the most important attribute of the holiday, a symbol of the Resurrection itself and the bread of eternal life that came down from heaven. It personifies the invisible presence of Christ at every festive table.
- Eggs (Easter eggs and Easter eggs): A primordial symbol of new life, rebirth, and the victory of life over death. The red Easter egg reminds us of the blood shed by the Savior for the sake of mankind.
- Meat dishes: Homemade sausage, bacon, or ham symbolize the sacrificial lamb that was slaughtered at the Old Testament Passover. They are a sign of spiritual joy and comfort from the holiday.
- Dairy products: Cheese, butter (often shaped like a ram or a cross) are a symbol of abundance, tenderness, God’s sacrifice, and His boundless love for people.

What you absolutely must not put in an Easter basket
There are many myths about what can and cannot be consecrated, from which the superstition of “Never put this in the basket” arises. However, the Christian Church clearly defines 5 things that have no place in the consecrated basket:
- Alcohol (except Cahors). People often ask whether it is possible to bless wine. The Church allows the blessing of a bottle of church wine (Cahors), but strong alcohol (vodka, cognac) or beer is strictly prohibited. After all, even Cahors priests advise simply leaving it for home meals.
- Knives and sharp objects. There is a popular superstition that consecrated foods should be cut with a consecrated knife. This is a myth – knives have no place in a church. They should be on the table but not in the festive basket.
- Money, wallets, and keys. Easter is a holiday of the soul, not of material goods, enrichment, or provision for the flesh. Not only is it not worth sanctifying material values, material values often tempt people to sin, so it is the exact opposite of what every Christian struggles with.
- Ornaments and jewelry. Crosses, icons, and medallions are best blessed separately on another day at a regular service, rather than together with the festive food in a festive basket.
- Excessive food is also not good. Gluttony is considered a sin. Take exactly as much food as your family can eat during the festive break at breakfast on Easter. Consecrated food should not be thrown away in the trash, it should be treated like ordinary food, it should be placed in the middle of the table, and should not be eaten in large pieces so that the whole family has enough to taste the consecrated food.
