Why does the date of Trinity coincide according to the old and new styles (calendars)?
The main rule to remember: Trinity is a transitional holiday, always celebrated exactly on the 50th day after Easter (hence the church name – Pentecost).
The transition of the OCU and the UGCC to the new Julian calendar changed the dates of only non-transitory holidays (such as Christmas, Epiphany, and the Protection of the Virgin Mary – they were moved back 13 days). However, the rules for calculating the date of Easter and all holidays dependent on it (Paschalia) remained old.
That is why both supporters of the old style and those who have switched to the new calendar celebrate Trinity at the same time.
Exact dates of Trinity 2026
Since the holiday is tied to Easter, the dates differ only between Eastern and Western Rite Christians:
- Orthodox (old and new style) and Greek Catholics (OCU, UGCC): Easter in 2026 falls on April 12. We count 50 days and get the date of Trinity — Sunday, May 31 .
- Catholics: Western Rite Christians celebrate Easter on April 5 according to the Gregorian Paschal Calendar. Therefore, Catholic Trinity Sunday in 2026 falls on Sunday, May 24 .
Main traditions: how to celebrate Pentecost correctly
The people often call Trinity the Green Holidays. This is due to the ancient and beautiful tradition of decorating churches and homes with the greenery of linden, alder, and birch.
What is customary to do on Trinity:
- Decorate your home with herbs. For the holiday, the home is decorated with branches of birch, linden, oak, and maple, and the floor is covered with fragrant herbs – lepekha (Tatar herb), thyme, lovage, mint, and wormwood. It is believed that greenery symbolizes the renewal of life and the grace of the Holy Spirit.
- Attend a festive service. One of the most beautiful services of the year is held in churches on Trinity. Priests wear green vestments, and parishioners bring bouquets of herbs for consecration. After the liturgy, special kneeling prayers are recited.
- Gather around the family table. There is no fasting on this day (on the contrary, the week following Trinity is continuous and cancels the fasting on Wednesday and Friday). Housewives traditionally bake loaves, pies, and prepare festive dishes.
- Harvest medicinal herbs. People believed that herbs collected on the Green Holidays had special healing powers.

What you absolutely cannot do on Trinity
The Feast of Pentecost requires spiritual concentration, so there are strict church and folk restrictions:
- Engage in heavy physical labor. Construction, repairs, work in the garden or in the garden should be postponed. The earth is considered a “birthday girl” on this day, so it cannot be dug or planted.
- Do housework. Cleaning, laundry, sewing should be completed before the holiday or postponed until after the holiday.
- Quarrel, backbite, and gossip. Negative emotions destroy the bright energy of the holiday, and backbiting and quarreling add sins to you.
- Go to the forest alone and swim in water bodies. This is an old folk (pagan) belief that warns against mermaids and seagulls, which supposedly become very active during the Green Holidays. The Church simply advises to give preference to prayer on this day, rather than beach relaxation.
- Refusing help. As with any major holiday, you need to be merciful and help those in need, as they say, “God can be contacted in the form of a beggar, so you shouldn’t refuse him.”
