Why do they turn off the lights: the difference between stabilization and emergency schedules
To understand the situation, it is important to distinguish between the types of outages that are used in the Ukrainian power system:
- Stabilization (planned) outages. These are predictable restrictions. They occur according to the schedule above. They are used when the amount of electricity generation is less than the amount of consumption, and dispatchers need to balance the system to avoid large-scale accidents.
- Emergency (emergency) outages. These are imposed immediately and without warning. This occurs during attacks on energy infrastructure or in the event of a sudden equipment failure. During emergency outages, scheduled schedules are not in effect.
Basic rules for preparing for a power outage
To minimize discomfort during a power outage in Dnipro, follow these simple recommendations:
- Charge your devices. Always keep power banks, phones, laptops, and flashlights fully charged while there is light.
- Water and food supplies. Have a few days’ supply of drinking and industrial water at home, as well as foods that do not require heat treatment or cooking on an electric stove.
- Protecting equipment. Unplug energy-intensive appliances (refrigerators, water heaters, washing machines, TVs) from outlets before a planned outage. This will protect them from damage due to possible voltage surges when the power is restored. Turn them on gradually, 15-20 minutes after the light comes on.
- Alternative Internet. Check with your provider if they use GPON technology (optical internet that works without electricity). If so, you will only need a small power bank to power your home router.
