Church content: Carrying out the honest wood of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord

Despite the fact that the holiday is popularly associated with honey and poppy, its true church name sounds completely different: The Descent (Exaltation) of the Holy Trees of the Life-Creating Cross of the Lord .

This tradition originated in Constantinople in the 9th century. In August, epidemics often broke out due to the heat. To ward off diseases, a part of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified was taken from the imperial treasury. The shrine was carried through the streets of the city, water was blessed with it, and prayers were offered for the healing of the sick. That is why on this day, a small ceremony of blessing water is necessarily held in churches.

In addition, this day commemorates the memory of the seven martyrs Maccabees , their mother Solomonia, and their teacher Eleazar, who suffered for their faith in 166 BC. This is where the popular name of the holiday comes from – Maccabees , which among Ukrainian ancestors phonetically merged with the harvest of poppy, which became the main symbol of the holiday and consecration in temples on this day.

Ukrainian traditions on Makovia (Honey Savior) represent an amazing and unique combination of Christian beliefs and ancient agricultural customs and even pagan rites. Which became a typical example of the rules that are customary to follow on this day:

  • Blessing of water, honey and poppy seeds. Believers bring jars of new harvest honey to the church from the apiary of bees that have just harvested the last large batch of honey from the fields. It is believed that after blessing, honey acquires healing properties and is stored at home all year round and used in special cases (for illnesses, colds or to treat other health problems).
  • Creation of “Makovijchiky”. These are special amulet bouquets consisting of healing herbs (mint, thyme, wormwood, cornflowers) and necessarily several ripe poppy heads. Such a bouquet is consecrated in the church and kept at home behind icons all year round as protection from troubles, thunderstorms and other disasters.
  • Preparation of ritual dishes. Housewives bake poppy seed cakes (shulyki), pancakes with honey, and poppy seed rolls. Since the strict Assumption Fast begins on August 1 (according to the new style), all dishes should be lean and without alcohol.
  • Cleaning wells. According to an ancient tradition, it was on Medovy Spas that men cleaned wells so that the water in them would always be fresh and healing.

What you absolutely cannot do on Macoviya

Since the holiday coincides with the beginning of the Assumption Lent (which lasts until the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), there are a number of prohibitions:

  1. You can’t eat fast food. Meat, eggs, dairy products, and drinking alcohol is strictly prohibited.
  2. Heavy physical labor is prohibited. You should not do repairs, work in the garden (except for collecting honey and poppy seeds), or organize general cleaning.
  3. You can’t quarrel or curse. It is believed that all the negativity you wish upon others on this day will come back to you.
  4. Loud celebrations. Since this is a period of fasting, the church does not recommend holding loud weddings, parties, christenings, and other large celebrations with alcohol.

Folk omens for August 1 (Honey Savior)

For centuries, our ancestors have observed nature on this day to predict future weather:

  • What the weather will be like on Medovy Spas (August 15, new style) will be the same on Assumption (August 15, new style).
  • If it rains, the year will be fruitful, and there will be almost no forest fires.
  • Migratory birds are beginning to gather in flocks – autumn will come early.
  • The bees have stopped carrying honey – it’s time to prepare the apiary for winter.
