When is Peter and Paul 2026 according to the new and old calendar (style) and the end of the Peter’s fast

For Eastern Orthodox Christians, the day of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, since the time of Kievan Rus, when Rus was baptized by Vladimir the Great, has been one of the most important and most anticipated summer holidays. However, after some changes and transitions in the Christian calendar, confusion has arisen about when the Peter’s fast ends and when we celebrate Peter and Paul in 2026. This is important, also because in Ukrainian tradition, this day not only ends the summer fast, but also marks the full bloom of summer and the beginning of preparation for the first harvest of early wheat in the field and the gathering of an early harvest of ripe berries in the forest, such as blueberries and raspberries.

Thanks to the calendar reform that the OCU and the UGCC implemented in September 2023, the date of celebration for holidays not connected to Christmas or Easter has shifted 13 days back for most Ukrainians.

According to the new (New Julian) calendar

Today, most parishes in Ukraine celebrate non-transitory holidays together with the Western Christian world, namely:

• In 2026, Peter and Paul Day in the new style is celebrated on June 29 (Monday, the first day of the week).

According to the old (Julian) calendar

In that part of religious communities and believers where the old tradition is still followed:

• According to the old style, in 2026, the feast of Peter and Paul will be celebrated on July 12 (Sunday, the last day of the week and a day off).

What will happen to Peter’s post in 2026?

The transition to the new calendar not only corrected the historical lag in time due to a previous miscalculation, but also made significant adjustments to the duration of the Petrine Fast (Petrivka) . The fact is that the beginning of this fast is movable – it depends on the date of Easter (Trinity), but the end is always fixed – on the eve of the feast of Peter and Paul .

Due to the fact that Eastern Rite Christians celebrated Easter quite late in 2026 (April 12), and Trinity falls on May 31:

• According to the new style: Peter’s Fast in 2026 actually lasts a symbolic 1-2 days (depending on diocesan settings), because Trinity is celebrated at the end of May, and the feast of Peter and Paul is already on June 29. For such cases, the church charter provides for a relaxation so that the fast does not “overlap” with the festive weeks after Trinity.
• Old Style: For those who celebrate on July 12, Peter’s Lent will begin on June 8 and will last a full 5 weeks.

Who are Peter and Paul: the spiritual meaning of the holiday

The Church calls these saints the Chief Apostles . Despite the fact that they had completely different lives, characters, and even preached to different segments of the population, both made a huge contribution to the spread of Christianity and were martyred in Rome on the same day (or with a difference of one year).

• Saint Peter was once a simple fisherman from Galilee, one of the first and most devoted disciples of Jesus Christ. It was he whom the Lord called the “rock” on which He built His Church.
• Saint Paul was originally a Pharisee and a cruel persecutor of Christians named Saul. However, after a miracle on the road to Damascus, where Christ Himself appeared to him, he became the most fervent preacher of the New Testament among the pagans and the author of many Epistles.

Folk traditions and signs on “Petra”

In Ukrainian folk life, the feast of Peter and Paul, like many others, was combined with pagan customs and rituals, symbolizing the final arrival of a real hot summer and the beginning of mowing and harvesting the first harvest in the fields from sowing and berries and mushrooms in the forest.

Traditional rites for Peter and Paul that came from paganism and have survived to this day:

1. “Sun Watch”: Young people stayed up the night before the holiday and went to the hills to meet the dawn. It was believed that the sun on Peter’s Day “plays” in the sky with different colors, which portends happiness.
2. Treating the shepherds: The hostesses would bake traditional cheese donuts or pies, which were called “mandryki .” They were given to the shepherds in memory of the wanderings of Peter and Paul around the world.
3. Fishing traditions: Since Saint Peter is considered the patron saint of fishermen, people associated with this fishery prayed to him for a rich catch and arranged a joint festive meal.

The main weather signs on this day according to ancient beliefs:

• If the zozulya is no longer forging on Peter’s Day, autumn will be early, and if it is forging after the holiday, summer will be delayed.
• Rain on Peter and Paul promises a rich harvest of rye (but if it rains three times, the harvest will be extraordinary).
• A hot day on St. Peter’s Day – expect severe frost on Christmas.

What is strictly forbidden to do on this day?

As with any major church holiday, Peter and Paul are subject to strict prohibitions, not only on heavy physical labor, but also spiritual and everyday restrictions:

• You cannot work in the field or garden: Construction, working in the garden near the house, cleaning, washing, as well as needlework (sewing, knitting, embroidery) are prohibited, this is disrespectful to the saints of this day, Peter and Paul.
• It is forbidden to quarrel and curse: Any negativity, insults, or showdowns on this day are considered a great sin and distract from the main holiday of God’s servants.
• You should not lend or borrow money: People believed that it could bring financial hardship for the whole year (although this is more of a pagan story that has survived to this day).
• Ban on weddings: Although Lent ends according to the new style, on the day of the feast of Peter and Paul, weddings are not held in churches (the only exception is the baptism of children).
