The day of celebration of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr the Great (Sviatoslavovich) is awaited all year round not only in Kyiv, but throughout Ukraine, and throughout the Christian world of the Eastern Rite.
From history textbooks we know about the Great Prince of Kiev Vladimir who chose between several religions for the then inhabitants of Rus, who were pagans. As we all know well, his choice fell on the Orthodox faith – Christianity, – following the example of the great Byzantium .
So, the feast of St. Vladimir is not only a grand historical event, but also a revered church holiday, and a significant date in the history of both Christianity and the state formation of Rus-Ukraine or its historical name – “ Rus Land ”. Yes, the word “Rus” itself is the historical name of the territory of modern Ukraine , and it is the first East Slavic medieval state with its center in Kyiv , which existed in the 9th–13th centuries (the so-called territory of the Russian state did not exist then, it would appear much later, in the 18th century (1721) when Tsar Peter I officially renamed the Moscow Kingdom the Russian Empire ).
Although Russia is trying to appropriate the name “Rus” as its own, in general, like many other things, we should not forget about Rus as the ancient name of the territory of modern Ukraine with its capital Kyiv .
So, in this article, we will examine in detail what was behind this choice, what are the clear dates for celebrating the holiday of Vladimir according to the new and old style in 2026, and will also reveal the essence and traditions of this day.

According to the old (Julian) style
Some parishes, monasteries, and some believers continue to live according to the old style, out of their own convictions. The Church does not prohibit this in order to preserve peace among believers and to give everyone the freedom to choose for themselves which dates to observe.

Prince Volodymyr Svyatoslavovich (also known to the people as Volodymyr Krasne Sonechko) is one of the most powerful figures in Ukrainian history, although Russia, as always, is trying to change history and convince the whole world that this is their prince.

Traditions and folk signs on Vladimir
The feast of St. Volodymyr falls in the middle of summer (the peak of summer), when nature is in full swing, and in the villages, work is usually in full swing in the garden and at home. However, our ancestors always found a balance between work on the land and in the household and the spiritual joy of church Orthodox holidays.
What was historically customary for our ancestors to do on this day:
- Go to church. Our ancestors, believers, historically attended festive services and processions on St. Volodymyr’s Day.
- Pray to the holy prince. Volodymyr is asked for peace for Ukraine, wisdom for rulers, healing from serious illnesses (especially eye diseases), and strengthening in faith.
- Congratulations to the birthday boy. This is the main Angel Day for all men and boys named Vladimir. So don’t forget to congratulate your sons, fathers and grandfathers on Angel Day.
Strict bans on Vladimir:
- You can’t work hard. Field work, harvesting, large-scale construction, or general cleaning are prohibited on this day. People believed that if you go out to work in the field on this day, you can bring misfortune or lightning upon yourself.
- It is forbidden to quarrel and speak bad words. As with any great holiday, it is important to maintain spiritual purity, pray to God, and not harbor resentment and conflicts with loved ones.
- You should not abuse alcohol and overeat. The holiday brings a calm family situation and harmony with summer nature. A great time for a picnic or relaxation on the river.
