The confusion arose after the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) switched to the new Julian calendar in 2023, which shifted the dates of non-transitory holidays back 13 days, but many continue to celebrate according to the old calendar. The essence of the holiday: why is it not a holiday, but a day of mourning?

The very word “assumption” means peaceful sleep, a quiet end, and not death in its usual, tragic sense. According to church tradition, the Virgin Mary learned in advance from the archangel Gabriel about her earthly end.
Christian tradition teaches that the Virgin Mary did not die, but “fell asleep” in order to be reunited with her Son, Jesus Christ, in Heaven upon awakening. Therefore, the Assumption is a bright, joyful celebration of the victory of eternal life over death. On this day, clergy wear blue vestments, symbolizing the purity and heavenly grace of the Virgin Mary.
Traditions and customs for the First Holy Week

In Ukraine, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has long been closely intertwined with the end of the harvest and the arrival of autumn. It is not without reason that this day is also called the First Holy (it is followed by the Second Holy – the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and the Third – the Presentation in the Temple).
The main traditions for the feast of the Assumption:
- Consecration of ears of wheat and bread: It is customary to bring ears of wheat from the new harvest to the temple to thank God for the bread on the table after the harvest in the field. A freshly baked loaf is also consecrated.
- End of the fast: August 14 (according to the new calendar) marks the end of the two-week Assumption fast. On the feast of the Assumption itself, housewives set a generous table of meat dishes and salads from home-grown vegetables grown in their own garden (tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini). Since August 15 falls on a Saturday in 2026, it is permissible to consume milk, eggs, and wine.
- Winter harvesting: From this day on, people traditionally began actively salting cucumbers and tomatoes, fermenting cabbage, and collecting hazelnuts, preparing supplies from the fresh harvest for the coming winter.
- The beginning of the matchmaking period: After the First Holy Week in Ukraine, the time for mass weddings traditionally began, because there was already food on the table, there was time after the harvest and gardens, and there was no fasting. This period lasted just before the beginning of the long Christmas Lent.
What you absolutely cannot do on the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
In order not to bring trouble upon oneself and one’s family, people have long adhered to certain strict prohibitions, which were partly dictated by the church and separately preserved from our pagan ancestors:
- Walk barefoot on the grass. It was believed that the dew on this day was nature’s tears for the Virgin Mary. If you wet your feet in the dew, you can attract disease.
- Engage in heavy physical labor. It is forbidden to dig, build, wash, sew, or organize a general cleaning. The day should be dedicated to prayer and family, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
- Cut round products with a knife. According to popular belief, it is better to break bread with your hands on this day, rather than cutting it, so as not to “hurt” the shrine.
- To quarrel and wish evil. Negative words and thoughts, especially directed at relatives, are considered a great sin on this bright holiday of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
- Wear old or dirty shoes. Our ancestors believed that discomfort in the feet on this day promises a difficult and thorny path for the entire coming year.
Folk omens for August 15 (new style) August 28 (old style)
Nature at this time gave our ancestors accurate clues about the future weather, so they believed in the beliefs about:
- What the weather is like on the First of the Holy Week, what the autumn will be like.
- If there is a lot of frost on the trees in the morning (or thick fog), expect a rich harvest of mushrooms.
- A rainbow has appeared – autumn will be warm and long.
- Spider webs fly in the air – the winter will be frosty and with little snow.
In the end
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 2026, regardless of the date you celebrate it, according to the new or old style, is definitely a time of spiritual joy, gratitude and family comfort. However, we remember that in Ukraine, which is fighting for its own independence in 2026, the absolute majority of Ukrainian churches celebrate this great holiday on August 15. Visit the temple, bless the ears of the new harvest, gather your loved ones at the table and spend this day in peace and harmony.
