In each summer period of the year, Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate 3 great Saviors. The true religious meaning of the holiday: The Transfer of the Not-Made-by-Hands Image of Christ
From the church’s point of view, this holiday is not just for the consecration of the harvest, but it has a deep theological meaning. The holiday of the third Savior was established in honor of the transfer of the Not-Made-by-Hands Image of the Savior from Edessa to Constantinople in 944 .

According to legend, the ruler of Edessa, King Abgar, was seriously ill with leprosy. Having learned about the miracles of Jesus Christ, he sent his artist to paint a portrait of the Messiah. However, due to the large crowd of people and the amazing radiance, the artist was unable to do this. Then Jesus washed his face and wiped it with a towel (tablecloth), on which His Divine face was instantly reflected. Having received this Not-Made-by-Hands image, King Abgar was instantly healed.
Why is the Savior called Nut, Bread and Linen?
In Ukrainian folk tradition, the Third Savior received several names at once, each of which reflects the period of the economic year, which has more folk (customary, local) origin than church, namely:
- Walnut Spas. By mid-August, hazelnuts and walnuts finally ripen in forests and gardens. From this day on, it was officially allowed to collect and eat them.
- Bread Savior. By this time, Ukrainian peasants usually finished harvesting grain crops. On the holiday, they baked the first bread from the flour of the new harvest, which was taken to the temple for consecration.
- Linen (or Savior on Linen). In ancient times, fairs were held during this period, where homespun linen, flax, and yarn were sold. The consecration of fabrics was considered a blessing for successful trade and crafts.
What is celebrated in the church on the Third Day of the Savior?
Unlike Macovius (where poppy seeds and water are blessed) and Apple Spas (where fruits are blessed), the basket for the Third Spas has its own unique contents:
- Nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds) of the new harvest.
- Freshly baked bread , pies and pancakes made from new flour.
- Spikelets of wheat , rye and other grain crops.
- Honey and fruits (if you didn’t have time to bless them on Linen or Apple Savior).
- Clean water and healing herbs.
What is strictly forbidden to do on August 16 according to the new calendar or August 29 according to the old one
Since the Nutcracker Savior is celebrated the day after the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Assumption Fast has already ended . However, church prohibitions remain strict, which have even before that intertwined with folk (and even pagan) prohibitions:
- You cannot refuse help. Walnut Spas is a day of mercy, as Jesus taught and practiced. Refusing to help the poor, travelers, or those in need is considered a great sin.
- It is forbidden to be lazy. This is a time of active harvest and preparation for winter. Spending the day in complete inactivity and lying on the couch is not accepted and not recommended.
- You can’t quarrel and wish evil on someone. The Church calls for peace in the family; all negativity can return to the one who radiates it.
- It is forbidden to go into the forest without a talisman. In ancient times, it was believed that on this day, evil spirits were active in the forest, so people went to collect nuts only in groups and with prayer.
Folk signs on the Nut Spas

Our ancestors carefully watched nature on August 16 (new style) and August 29 (old calendar) to find out what autumn and winter would be like:
- If there was a rich harvest of nuts this year, there will be plenty of bread next year.
- If on the Third Savior, cranes fly south, then on the Protection of the Virgin (October 1, new style) expect the first frosts.
- Rain and thunderstorms on this day promise a warm and long autumn.
- Finding a double or fused nut means great financial luck for the whole year.
Result
The Third Savior (Walnut) is primarily an important church holiday associated with the preservation of the history of Jesus Christ, and after the church service in the temples, you can sum up the summer, bless the harvest, and give thanks for earthly blessings and begin to treat yourself to bread of the new harvest and wine (since the fast has already ended). In 2026 , according to the new Julian calendar, we will celebrate it on August 16 , or August 29 according to the old calendar , respectively. Do not forget to attend the festive service, treat your loved ones with fresh pastries and collect a handful of ripe nuts for happiness and abundance!
