With the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, and some even earlier, for example during the occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, many decided that they no longer wanted to speak a language that sowed death among Ukrainians and brought misfortune to all its inhabitants.

However, translating communication from your native language, that is, the language you think in, sometimes becomes a difficult task, because you actually have to translate everything in your head first.

The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that the translation of some words is unknown, which is when the so-called surzhik or “kaverkanie” of words begins, which causes panic in many due to the fear of looking “ridiculous”, being condemned for mistakes, or even appearing “uneducated.”

Why is it difficult to switch to Ukrainian in everyday life?

We humans, as living beings, are used to simplifying everything, not looking for complicated ways, but on the contrary, inventing new ways to get around the difficulties and get more for convenience. Therefore, in everyday communication, many people do not want to burden themselves with unnecessary translation into another language in their heads, especially before saying a simple phrase to their own husband or child, “pass me that blue plate from the table.”

Instead, it is this indifference and reluctance to translate now that creates a host of problems, namely:

Lack of habit

Speak every day, every hour, all day long in one language. When the question is no longer about translation in your head, but has been practiced to the point of automatism. You do not give yourself an environment for playing without rules, because after doing so, even when you are tired and have no strength, you can allow yourself to express your opinion to your child in the language of the occupier, because of which people die every day.

Not realizing the consequences

The more you give concessions and talk to your child or husband, with whom you adhere to the common desire to switch to Ukrainian in everyday life, the more likely it is that you will not reach your goal. Since it is our willpower that determines the result. The more you allow yourself to speak Russian, the more likely it is that your child will also get used to speaking Russian to you, and your husband will stop trying to switch to Ukrainian in everyday life.

Striving for the perfect

No student of any unknown language in the world has ever spoken it perfectly and without mistakes. Mistakes are an integral, obligatory part of any learning process. There is nothing perfect that has not been honed by a number of mistakes and repeated attempts. Your desire to speak “perfectly” or “not at all” right away is the anchor of your ship that will never be able to set sail.

How to switch to Ukrainian in everyday life quickly and painlessly (a few simple tips)

Here are a few more tips on how you can master the Ukrainian language without making it too difficult for yourself.

Daily perception of information only in Ukrainian

  • Block or temporarily limit any sources of information that do not load your brain with parallel learning. For example, watching your favorite movies or TV series only in Ukrainian voice acting. In this way, you subconsciously program your brain. It remembers new words, intonations, phrases precisely in the form of the voice and delivery of your favorite actor or cartoon character.
  • Constantly repeat new things. Don’t just read information or news in Ukrainian, but share it in Ukrainian with your family at home, discuss important nuances and express your own thoughts about this news, developing the topic. Thus, yes
  • Brain development. In general, any language learning from a scientific point of view is very beneficial not only for your erudition (constantly reading new information in a new language really significantly increases the overall erudition of you and your family when you share the knowledge and experience you have gained), but also develops your brain. It has been scientifically proven that learning new things prevents the risk of dementia , delays the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other problems with memory and thinking.
