Magnesium is often called the “sleep and rest pill” because it is critically important for the normal functioning of the nervous system and the body’s rest from the constant reaction to stress, work, challenges and obstacles of the modern world. According to the World Health Organization, up to 75% of the adult population does not get enough magnesium from their daily diet, although it would seem that the products containing it are inexpensive in themselves.
But there is another peculiarity, despite magnesium in the products that are in the refrigerator of almost every family, when we see magnesium tablets in pharmacies, do we have it in combination with vitamin B6? We will analyze why this is so, what is its mechanism of action, signs of deficiency in the human body and rules for taking it based on the latest scientific data.
Why Magnesium + B6: the secret of perfect synergy
Magnesium is almost fuel for the body, as it participates in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body: from DNA synthesis to the production of cellular energy (ATP). However, the macroelement itself is quite “capricious” and is difficult to digest in the intestines, so it should be taken in its pure form without additives for digestion.

This is where vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) comes to the rescue . It acts as a kind of “guide” that shows a specific path for its effective action in the human body:
- Improves the absorption of magnesium from the gastrointestinal tract into the blood.
- Helps magnesium ions penetrate into cells, where they work directly.
- Keeps magnesium in the cells, preventing its rapid excretion through the kidneys.
In addition, both substances have a synergistic effect on the nervous system. Scientific studies show that the combination of Magnesium and B6 is much more effective in reducing anxiety and stress levels than taking magnesium alone.
Symptoms of deficiency (hypomagnesemia)
A decrease in magnesium levels in the body does not always manifest itself instantly, sometimes we may not attach importance to certain minor changes in the body, considering this a normal condition. But often the symptoms increase gradually and are masked as ordinary fatigue or overstrain. As an example, calf muscle cramps at the end of the working day. Not all types of magnesium are equally beneficial. Pay attention to the composition on the packaging:
- Magnesium Citrate: Highly bioavailable. Well absorbed, but may have a mild laxative effect (useful if prone to constipation).
- Magnesium Glycinate (Bisglycinate): Best for calming the nervous system and improving sleep. Does not irritate the stomach.
- Magnesium malate: A great choice for chronic fatigue and muscle pain (energy form).
- Magnesium oxide and sulfate: Avoid these forms. They are only 4-10% absorbed and most often cause diarrhea.
2. Dosage
According to the recommendations of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), the daily requirement of elemental magnesium is:
- For women: 310–320 mg.
- For men: 400–420 mg.
- During pregnancy: the dosage increases to 350–360 mg.
Important: The body can absorb no more than 200 mg of magnesium at a time. Therefore, it is better to divide the daily dose into two doses (for example, in the morning and in the evening).

3. Reception time and compatibility
- Take Magnesium B6 with or immediately after meals to avoid stomach discomfort.
- If your goal is to improve sleep, take the supplement 1-2 hours before bedtime.
- Antagonists: Do not combine magnesium with iron supplements or high doses of calcium (they compete for absorption receptors). Space them out 2-3 hours apart.

Please note: No magnesium or B6 supplements will replace a healthy diet. Include spinach, pumpkin seeds, almonds, dark chocolate, and avocado in your diet—they are all great natural sources of this mineral.
